It was found that the powder possessed a reducing activity toward various aliphatic keto esters.In particular, ethyl acetoacetate and ethyl 4-chloroacetoacetate were reduced by the powder in the water to the corresponding β-hydroxy esters with high conversion ratios (>99%) and excellent enantiomeric excesses (>99% e.e.).
