A communication laboratory program with simulated patients (SPs) included forty-four students who were admitted to our college in 2004 (training group). Forty-one other students who were admitted to our college in 2005 were the untrained group. After learning basic nursing practice, an evaluation of communication for both groups was conducted using a questionnaire. Both groups were high in \"empathic communication\" and \"basic technique for communication,\" and low in \"solving problems\" (nursing support). However, improvement of other evaluation items, \"gaining patient's consent to student's request,\" and \"expressing readiness to respond to a request from the patient\" was found in the training group rather than the untrained group. These results suggest the communication laboratory program mai be effective for students to make inferences of the patient's feelings and situation since the program is practical in nature. Moreover, contact with SPs and receiving feedback from SPs on the laboratory program were useful in simulating contact with real patients.
